Keratoconus
Keratoconus is a progressive eye disease causing thinning of the cornea, which is the clear front surface of the eye. As the cornea thins out, it develops a cone-like bulge. These patients often have nearsightedness and astigmatism and may experience blurry vision or double vision. As keratoconus progresses, the quality of vision deteriorates and a patient may reach a point where glasses cannot adequately correct their vision.
Treatment
Treatment for keratoconus depends on the severity of your condition and how quickly the condition is progressing. Mild to moderate keratoconus can be treated with eyeglasses or contact lenses. Our office specializes in contact lens fittings for keratoconus using scleral lenses, hybrid lenses, or rigid gas permeable lenses.
For many people with mild to moderate keratoconus, the cornea will become stable after a few years. If you have this type, you likely won’t experience severe vision problems or require further treatment than glasses or specialty contact lenses.
In some people with keratoconus, the cornea becomes scarred or wearing contact lenses becomes difficult. In these cases, surgery might be necessary. There are two procedures commonly done for keratoconus: a corneal transplant and corneal crosslinking.
