Dr. S. Grant Smith

Dr. Smith graduated Magna Cum Laude from LeTourneau College in Longview, Texas in 1983 with a Bachelor of Science Degree.

He attended Medical School at the Creighton University School of Medicine in Omaha Nebraska, where he graduated in 1987 with his Doctorate of Medicine.

Dr. Smith completed his internship at Scott and White Hospital in Temple, Texas. He was a fellow in corneal research at the University of Texas Medical School in San Antonio. Dr. Smith was in residence at the Louisiana State University Medical School in Shreveport, Louisiana. He graduated from medical school with honors and is a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. Dr. Smith has been board certified since 1994.

Dr. Smith and his wife, Lisa, are raising their family in New Braunfels.

Dr. Joshua Levar

Dr. Levar graduated as a President’s Endowed scholar from Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas in 2001 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biomedical Science.

He attended graduate school at the University of North Texas Health Sciences Center in Fort Worth, Texas where he completed a Master’s degree in Clinical Research. His thesis work was presented at the American Society of Clinical Oncology meeting in New Orleans in 2004.

He attended medical school at Texas Tech University School of Medicine in Lubbock, Texas, where he graduated in 2008 with his Doctorate of Medicine.

Dr. Levar completed his surgical internship at Baylor in Houston, Texas and residency in ophthalmology at Loyola in Chicago, Illinois. His research involving ophthalmic pharmacology was presented at the American Society for Cataract and Refractive Surgery meeting in Miami in 2011. He is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

Dr. Joshua Levar

Dr. Jessica L. Tompkins

Dr. Tompkins is a native Texan and grew up in the Houston area. She graduated from Texas State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and a minor in Chemistry. She received her Doctorate of Optometry from the University of Houston College of Optometry.

During her externship rotations, Dr. Tompkins received extensive training in specialty contact lenses, keratoconus, neuro-optometric rehabilitation for brain injuries, diagnosis and treatment of ocular diseases such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy, as well as co-management care for INTACS, PRK, and LASIK procedures. Her special interests include contact lenses and dry eye management.

Dr. Tompkins is a therapeutic optometrist and glaucoma specialist. She is a member of the Texas Optometric Association and the American Optometric Association.

Dr. Tompkins feels very blessed to be a part of the NBVC team and loves living in New Braunfels. When not examining eyes, she enjoys spending time with family and friends, traveling, snow skiing, water sports, and volunteering for the New Braunfels area Young Life.
